In southern England, less than 60 miles to the north-west of London, lies the city of Oxford, home to the University of Oxford – one of the leading universities in the world and the oldest university in the English-speaking world. There are a plethora of theatres and cinemas in the city, as well as the world-famous Bodleian Library: with over 120 miles of shelving, it is the second-largest library in the UK, after the British Library. There are also a number of museums, most of which are departments of the University of Oxford, including the Ashmolean Museum, which is the oldest museum in the UK. The museum houses pieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Picasso, Turner and Michelangelo, as well as historical artefacts from around the globe.
Oxford is served by the Chiltern Railways service to London Marylebone, with the station only half a mile from the city centre, as well as Cross Country services to Manchester and beyond. The A40 passes close to Oxford and runs out to join the M40 motorway, which links up north to Birmingham.
