The proximity of the universities has made the city a center for non-profit groups and think-tanks such as the National Bureau of Economic Research, Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and One Laptop per Child. Cambridge is known as a cradle of innovative technology and research. Hi-tech companies are among the largest employers. Three of the biggest have offices in Cambridge, along with major media corporations that use the town as their New England headquarters. On the outskirts of Boston, it is close to the city's universities, a global finance market and a range of strong industries including tourism, publishing, medicine and biotechnology.
