In southwest England is the port city of Plymouth. The city, located in Devon, has a rich maritime history, with some of the Pilgrim Fathers departing Plymouth for the New World in the 17th century. More recently, the city is home to the Marine Biological Association of the UK, a leading research body investigating all marine sciences. The Devonport Naval Base is also located in Plymouth and it is the largest naval base in Europe, as well as the only facility able to repair and refuel nuclear submarines. The base is a big employer and contributes much to local commerce, as well as the University of Plymouth, with almost 3000 staff.
From Plymouth train station, London can be reached directly in a little over three hours, arriving into Paddington. The A38 is close to the city and allows travellers easy access to the rest of the south west region, connecting to the M5 after 40 miles.
