It has the highest growth rate of any of Japan's 13 major cities. Sendai is known as the industrial and economic centre of the Tohoku economic region in north-eastern Japan and is the hub of the region's logistics and transportation. Retail and services are the two most important sectors to the Sendai economy, the two industries provide approximately two thirds of the employment and close to half of the businesses in the city. The city is encouraging research-oriented companies to move to the region, promoting the growth of SMEs, technology transfer to the business sector and international collaboration.
